Once known as a loose collection of keys about 20 miles in length connected by several bridges, Islamorada was formally incorporated as the key's fourth town in 1998. Islamorada, The Village of Islands, ranges from Plantation Key in the north through Lower Matecumbe Key in the south. With its own council in place, Islamorada is now a more concentrated area run by its own people who have a local interest, rather than by the County. They strive to control the local issues that are of concern to those who live and work there.
